Ceramic Glass

Wood Stove GlassCeramic glass is a powerful formula! It is a combination of tempered glass (which is already 7 times stronger than regular glass) and ceramic. This material is also called Pyroceram. It makes for a shatter resistant product that can withstand a thermal shock rating of 1380°F and intense heat up to 1400°F! This heat tolerance makes it ideal for any application where high temperatures are prevalent. High temperature ceramic glass is suitable for use in gas, oil, wood, pellet, coal burning, and bio-stoves. We use only genuine Pyroceram ceramic glass available in 3/16" thickness only. Pyroceram is a special formula that combines ceramic and tempered glass. The result is an extremely resilient pane of glass that features a subtle amber tint.

We are the best source for custom replacement glass for wood stoves! We have many pattern cuts available for your specific appliance! Whether your insert or stove requires an arch, notches, rounded edges, or other unique features, we have the ability to design a glass sheet to fit your application! Typical sizes are 36 x 20 inches, however we can even cut to fractional measurements not listed on our product pages! Glass is generally cut and sent out for shipping the same day it is ordered. If ordered later in the evening, we usually get it cut and out the door the next day. Pattern cuts for wood stoves may add 1 day or more depending on if we need a template, or the complexity of your request. Shipping to your door generally takes 2 to 3 days.

Intended For The Following Heat Stove Types:

  • Gas

Ceramic also works for coal stove glass replacement as well as pellet stove glass replacement. Wood, coal, and pellet are considered heater rated appliances and all require ceramic glass. If you don't know your model number it's alright, just measure your old pane of glass and use those measurements when ordering. Our high temperature ceramic glass will allow you to safely enjoy the beauty of the fire! Give us a call at 1-888-986-1535 for custom sizes and pattern cuts that you don't see listed on our website!

Some important things to remember:

  • Glass expands when heated! Please request your cut of glass to be at least 1/8" shy of the mounting surface. This measurement will allow for a safe thermal expansion. We cannot be held responsible for breaks due to improper calculations!
    • If your original ceramic glass sheet is still intact and you are able to obtain all of the dimensions needed for your pattern or rectangle custom cut product, you may use the glass for measuring purposes. However, we highly recommend double checking your measurements against the mounting surface for 100% accuracy.
  • Metal screws and mounting hardware also expand when exposed to high temperatures! To avoid damage to your glass when your appliance is in use, please do not over-tighten hardware. We cannot be held responsible for breaks due to hardware that has been secured too firmly.
  • Burning a fire with your glass doors closed generates extra heat. While tempered glass can tolerate high temperatures, this condition may be too extreme for the glass to handle. We recommend enjoying a roaring fire with the doors open.
  • Tempered glass should NEVER be installed on a fireplace insert or heating stove (wood, pellet, gas, or coal). Tempered glass can only withstand temperatures up to 400°F. Inserts and heating stoves are capable of producing temperatures up to 1400°F. Therefore, ceramic glass is required for these appliances.
  • Never use a sealant when replacing ceramic glass. Sealant will prevent the glass from expanding and contracting with the door when exposed tot he temperature fluctuations of a fire. This lack of movement will cause the glass window to break. The sheet is held in place by mounting hardware. The clips push the glass against the gasket in your door to form an airtight seal, as well as allow the glass sheet to expand. (Remember not to overtighten the hardware!)

Questions and Answers about ceramic glass:

What is Pyroceram ceramic wood stove glass?

  • Pyroceram is a special kind of glass-ceramic material that was derived by Corning Glass experiments in the 1950's. In 1953 a scientist was working on a new photosensitive glass called Fotoform, which contained silver nanoparticles to strengthen the structure of the glass. Upon heating up a fragment of this glass, he noticed that it resisted breakage at very high temperatures. Upon further investigation, it was clear that Corning had stumbled onto something great. By adding quartz to further strengthen the ceramic glass, they were able to create the roots of Pyroceram. This early quartz ceramic was known as Fotoceram and it would take 6 more years of development before it evolved into what we now know as Pyroceram ceramic glass. For over 50 years Pyroceram has been the go-to glass for repairing or replacing the glass in wood stove doors.

Why does my wood stove need replacement Pyroceram ceramic glass?

  • Generally, heating stoves that burn wood, wood pellets, coal, bio, or oil, operate at very high temperatures in excess of 1000°F and require a special kind of replacement glass. Glass is manufactured using the high temperature Pyroceram crystalline formula, specially designed for stove doors in order to withstand the heat. Normal or tempered glass simply cannot withstand the high heat and will shatter when your wood stove door approaches operating temperature. Pyroceram ceramic wood stove glass has a maximum heat tolerance of 1380° F to 1400° F, making it an ideal solution for most types of heating stoves.

How do I replace the Pyroceram glass and fiberglass gasket in my wood stove door?

  • Although the details differ for each type of wood stove door, the overall process is generally the same. First, let your stove and door completely cool down. Next, try to remove the old wood stove glass without breaking it. If the old glass is already broken, you can use tape over the cracks to prevent it from falling apart when removed. Once the old wood stove glass is removed, measure it as accurately as possible. Next, remove any old stove gasket, cement, and sealant material. Take note of how much new stove gasket you need. Next, measure the opening where the glass was, subtracting 1/8 inch from each side to compensate for gasket material and thermal expansion that occurs when glass heats up. Tight fitting glass has the potential to shatter under the duress of thermal expansion. Once your new glass and gasket arrives, reverse the process. Put cement and stove gasket in first, followed by the Pyroceram glass, then secure it with your wood stove door hardware. After the cement cures for the recommended time, you are ready to use your wood stove!

Do I need a new fiberglass gasket for my Pyroceram wood stove glass install?

  • Yes, you also need to replace the gasket in your wood stove in 99% of glass replacement cases. This is because old fiberglass stove gasket is often covered in hard cement and debris, or could be fraying. It's not safe or efficient to run your wood stove at operating temperature using an old gasket. Furthermore, any gaps or fraying could allow dangerous carbon monoxide to escape around the replacement glass and out of the wood stove door into your living space. On the contrary, too much fresh air could get in, resulting in a less-than-controllable wood stove burn or spikes in radiated heat. Finally, a damaged stove gasket can effect the operation of your stove burner, door air wash system, or even change the way the stove vents from the chimney, causing unnecessary creosote buildup. For your safety, always install new a fiberglass gasket when replacing Pyroceram glass in your wood stove. We have a selection of fiberglass gaskets that should fit any wood stove door.

Can you cut Pyroceram glass to match the special shape of my wood stove door?

  • Absolutely! We have over 30 custom shapes available for our wood stove glass, but that's not where we stop. We may require you to trace a template of the old wood stove glass and mail it to us so we can get it exactly right. We can cut just about any pattern including custom arches, rounded corners, or even perfect circles. Please note: these patterns only apply to our replacement Pyroceram wood stove glass and cannot be applied to tempered fireplace glass.

Can I use high strength tempered glass instead of high temperature Pyroceram glass in my stove?

  • Tempered glass has a lower temperature rating of 400° F, meaning that it will shatter after a couple minutes of being exposed to the extreme temperatures of your heating stove. If broken and left unattended, this is dangerous and could release smoke, carbon monoxide, or sparks into your home. Always use the recommended high temperature Pyroceram ceramic for your replacement wood stove glass needs.

Will Pyroceram ceramic glass work in my kitchen cook top or range?

  • We specialize in replacement wood stove glass to ensure you get the best service and quality and therefore do not recommend using our glass for cook stove tops, ranges, or oven doors. It may void warranty or even worse, cause injury if it breaks due to the wrong thickness or lack of manufacturer specific glass formula details. Only use our Pyroceram ceramic glass in a wood, coal, pellet, or bio heating stove door.

Other Heat Resistant Glass

  • Older antique wood stoves, European stoves, and coal stoves can accommodate what's called mica glass. Mica is a transparent mineral strip that is easy to cut and resists extreme heat up to 1800° F before burning through. If you've checked your heating stove owner's manual and verified that mica can be used as a door window pane, click here to explore the available sizes we offer!

Each type of high temperature glass is different, with specific recommended applications. It is important to make sure your specifications are correct and you allow room for the glass to expand with the heat.
