Catalytic combustor life span can vary based on several factors. Operating temperatures, fuel burned, stove design, contaminated fuel burned and total hours. Prior to replacement however, a thorough cleaning should be performed. With proper care, a new catalytic combustor will give years of fuel savings, lowered emissions, and increased heating. By following some simple guidelines, you can ensure yourself maximum catalyst performance and longevity.
Platinum and palladium are the catalytic substances in our combustors. These metals are applied to the honeycomb of the combustor (either ceramic or steel). Your wood stove or fireplace will need a bypass in order to use a catalytic combustor.
When the exhaust temperature isn't high enough for a combustor to "light-off" the wood-smoke exhaust must have an alternate route to go, until the combustor is hot enough to perform its function.
Will I Need Gasket For My Catalytic Combustor?
Original equipment catalytic combustors that are "canned" (the ceramic is wrapped with a stainless steel strip) should be replaced by new combustors that are also canned. Observe that canned combustors have gasket material sandwiched between the can and the ceramic honeycomb.
Wood stoves with canned combustors may, or may not, require additional gasket outside the can for a good fit inside the stove. This depends on the particular stove design. In some cases the combustor assembly consists of two or more pieces. Gasket should be used between the individual pieces for a good fit.
Federal law requires any EPA-certified catalytic wood stoves be operated with combustors to reduce air pollution over the entire life of the stove.

Combustors are guaranteed to contain sufficient catalytic precious metals (platinum and/or palladium) formulated and properly applied to conform to requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for certified wood-burning products, and when installed in USA are warranted for structural integrity for five years or 12,000 hours burn-time, whichever comes first, when correctly installed and maintained. Failure due to incorrect use, including with fuels other than dry natural wood, is excluded.
